Hi, I’m Lucia Kula. An Academic, Lawyer, Mentor & Speaker.

My Message

There are many ways to contribute to change, and that responsibility is often a challenging task, nonetheless, it is how we approach these difficulties that makes the journey a fulfilling one. When you are committed to change, it is imperative that you are able to reflect on your own contributions, no matter how little they may seem. As a former refugee, as a Black, African, woman, it has always been necessary to assert my voice, to bring new considerations, notions, and narratives to legal scholarship, academic engagement, decolonisation, and more.

I actively encourage dialogue on migration, international legal scholarship, access and inclusion in Higher Education (HE), and decolonisation of public and private institutions. As an academic and consultant, my vision for BlackSpertise is to centre the lived experiences and voices of Black, and other marginalised people. It is about more than numbers, it focuses on lasting change beyond equality and diversity, i.e. equity and liberation.

“Make a difference about something other than yourselves.”

– Toni Morrison

Background

As an Angolan-Dutch academic and former refugee, I am passionate about including the voices of marginalised people where change needs to happen. In my teaching, and contributions for, The BBC, France24, NPO, Chatham House, Africa Research Institute, The UN, and more, I encourage an open and dynamic dialogue to include diverse perspectives and reflections on migration, law and gender, decolonisation, academic engagement, and more.
